Art School Vs. University

As an upperclassman in high school the phrase “where do you want to go to college” is becoming all too familiar. In fact, if one more distant relative or family friend asks you this question you may feel the need to start inventing elaborate scenarios just to get them off your back. Its not that you don’t want to go to college its simply that you’re not sure where you belong. Inevitably, some of your friends have already planned their college careers all the way down to their first choice of dorm and preferred major (perhaps minor too). Their confident enthusiasm (and sudden interest in school colors) is probably not making your decision any easier. Where DO you belong? A place where you could experiment with your love of art and design would be nice. But still you wonder, “is art school right for me”?...

The BFA Degree

Are professional art schools like law schools? Yes, in that art college graduates, like law school graduates are equipped to be successful in a variety of fields outside of their original discipline. Some law school graduates end up not practicing law, or at least not for very long, becoming instead corporate executives, investment counselors, leaders of social service agencies, real estate developers, etc. Professional art college graduates, in the process of learning to be artists and designers, acquire the skills and insights of self-management, organization, discipline, resourcefulness, critical thinking, question asking, and problem solving all of whi h are highly transferable to other lines of work or interest. Art college students (and sometimes their teachers) don't always realize this applicability and adaptability. After all, the main purpose of the Bachelor of Fine Arts or comparable degree program is to educate professional artists and designers. Which is as it should be. But it is worth noting that this BFA education is also an excellent basis on which to build alternative or supplementary careers should one be so inclined...
